Introduction of the trainer by Prof. Kannan, MAESCO Advisor |
The whole one day training covers lectures on the key concepts on energy management system, , key steps in EnMS development and implementation and mixed with the use of EnMS tools complete with practical examples from real life case studies. This is due to, I am personally a consultant in EnMS and there were plenty of sharing of tips on how to develop EnMS at each individual organization and how to overcome possible barriers from within the organizations.
The training has little coverage on the technical or engineering topics in energy management since the emphasis is more improving energy performances and sustaining the desired results through effective management practices.
Since the last batch of participants, I have introduced the use of EnMS template or spreadsheet that I was trained under the UNIDO EnMS Expert program and the tool has created more interest from the participants.
With some real life data and information, I showed and guided them on how to develop, implement and monitor EnMS at their company or at any organization in a systematic method of documentation and updating their progress from the very beginning.
One of the area that really keep them "awake" in the class is when reviewing the energy data and to identify the drivers of energy consumption using the regression analysis in the planning stage of EnMS development.
From regression analysis, they will be able to indicate the status of their existing energy performance through the interpretation of charts in the MS Excel sheet created from the data.
Most of them were so excited to know how the establish Energy Performance Indicators, Energy Baseline, identifying the possible baseload value and also to make projection of their energy consumption using the analysis.
Below is the example of a chart for regression analysis.
Regression analysis for energy consumption with production value as the driver |
Another method that really make them more interested to know and try is using the regression analysis of predict the energy consumption and to compare between the projected values and actual data that they have collected through actual measurements by developing and analysing the Cumulative Sum(CUSUM) chart as shown below.
Exampe of CUSUM chart that will enable us to monitor our actual energy performance when implementing energy conservation measures |
In general, the UNIDO EnMS template has been designed to be a master template for EnMS development and implementation with all components are arranged according to the requirements of EnMS based on ISO50001 Standard.
If each participant use the template and modify the content, data and information according to their own facilities and keep it updated in the same sequence with documents needed in a proper order, they will be basically would not have problem to go for certification whenever they are ready.
However, the key message of the training and the use to the template is not focusing too much towards certification. It is more on implementing the energy management system at their facilities by adopting the requirements in the standard which will lead to energy cost reduction for low and no cost measures as a start.

For more effective training in energy management system, minimum 2-day session is normally needed with limited numbers of participants where more time can be allocated for participants to enter and process their own data and information using the EnMS template.
With the assistance of one co-trainer, more facilitation and expert guidance by the trainers to each participant.
Participants are are expected to attend the training with a set of data and information related to energy consumption and management activities and the two-day session will more of interactive sessions rather than just lectures by the trainer.
Key output from the sessions will be a fundamental structure and analysed data that will be ready to continue to be used and adopted to kick of or further improve energy management implementation in their own facilities.
The outline for the two day program is as follows:

This two day program is also suitable to be conducted in-house and the key advantages of having it in-house is all data and information are available and can be sourced easily for the purpose data entry and analysis using the EnMS tool.
Below are some of the photos when I conducted the two-day training for one of my clients, in-house where using actual data and they have managed to assess their actual performance based on the analysis performed by their own energy management team members through out the interactive session.
I can be reached at zainiabdulwahab@yahoo.com for any query related to this topic and the training.
The program is also claimable under HRDF since me myself and my co-expert trainers are certified by PMSB.
